Happy summer ladies! As the temperatures are warming up and fashions are changing, let’s make sure that you are in style for the upcoming season. Here are some fashion do’s and don’ts to help you get started.
Neon to Work:
Neon is a very popular color for this season. Even so, there is a right and a wrong way to do neon. While a neon dress could be a great addition to your summer wardrobe, pairing neon separates may not be ideal for wearing to work. In this “Don’t” look, Melissa is wearing a neon green sleeveless top and a neon pink patterned pleated skirt.
This look is wrong on so many levels. First, the top and the bottom are both too large for her size and shape. They seem to overpower her with size and color. Even if they were the same size, placing these two colors together would not work.

Here is a beautiful way to wear neon for work. Mixing neon with neutral colors is a great way to wear neon to the office. Neutral colors balance out the brightness of the neon while also allowing the color to pop at the same time. Outfit Details: Coral Karen Kane Tech pencil skirt $195, White Michael Kors jacket $160, BCBGeneration Ankle Strap sandals in Warm Sand, and a Rainbow striped Kate Spade iPad case $85.
This is a prime example of “just because you can, it doesn’t mean you should.” Jade has the perfect figure for many of summer’s great looks. She is tall and slim with long legs. In this “don’t” look she is wearing a lace accented crop top with matching jean shorts with a lace accent. The top overpowers the shorts a bit with the way it billows at the sleeves. The shorts are just too tight to make this look work.
All Over Lace is a look that really works for summer if it is done right. When wearing all over lace, make sure that the pieces complement each other like this matching sleeveless blouse and trouser shorts from Michael Kors. Balance a voluminous top with a more structured bottom and vice versa. This all white ensemble is accented by nude wedges and even a pop of color with a mint green crossover bag. Outfit Details: Michael Kors white eyelet lace sleeveless top $99.50 and matching shorts $89.50, Jessica Simpson Natural Ruby Tumbled Wedges, Kate Spade Brightbery Green cross body bag $148.
With the temperatures heating up it also means that pant lengths will rise. One of the most popular lengths is the popular Capri pant. This is one of those looks that can go completely wrong as we see in this “don’t” outfit. Karen is wearing a tan and white striped t-shirt paired with a basic white Capri pant. The shirt and the pant both have an easy fit look to them that makes the whole look a bit frumpy and outdated. Neither item is particularly flattering on the model.
To make the Capri look work for Summer, have your Capri’s tailored to fit your height and leg. Tailoring your Capris will ensure that you have the perfect fit and help show off your great legs. Pair them with the rainbow striped boat neck sweater and you have a great look for a family cookout or a weekend at the Hamptons. We have also accessorized with a straw and white bag and orange and fushia sandals. Outfit Details: Lauren by Ralph Lauren rainbow striped shirt $129, Lilly Pulitzer Resort White Luxury Capri pant $158, Kenneth Cole Reaction Fuchsia and Orange Sandals, and Lauren by Ralph Lauren Natural and white Straw Satchel $228.
Maxi dresses are one of those options that can be worn completely wrong. This is an example of a maxi done completely wrong. Rachel is wearing a three-quarter sleeve button up top with a long oversized maxi skirt. Even though Rachel is not very tall, she can still wear maxi skirts, but this skirt does not flatter her at all. The pattern is too busy for her height and there are no vents in the skirt to maximize her height.
To make maxis work on shorter women, it is better to go with a solid color or one with a very simple print. This navy maxi is a perfect look for women of shorter stature. With the slide splits and button up front, this dress can be adjusted to show more leg and give the illusion of longer legs. Her waist is accentuated by a wide tan belt to give some separation and make her seem longer from the waist down. Tan sandals with a skinny heel or wedges further elongate the leg and make it so that she appears taller. A wide brim hat in orange adds a pop of color and helps to balance out the look. Wide brim hats can work on shorter women as long as they have a leaner look on the bottom half. Outfit Details: Michael Kors navy maxi dress with side splits and brown belt $150, Jessica Simpson Luggage color high heeled sandal, and Nine West orange straw hat $34.
