Summer Fashion Do’s and Don’ts

Happy summer ladies! As the temperatures are warming up and fashions are changing, let’s make sure that you are in style for the upcoming season. Here are some fashion do’s and don’ts to help you get started.

Neon to Work:

Neon is a very popular color for this season. Even so, there is a right and a wrong way to do neon. While a neon dress could be a great addition to your summer wardrobe, pairing neon separates may not be ideal for wearing to work. In this “Don’t” look, Melissa is wearing a neon green sleeveless top and a neon pink patterned pleated skirt.

This look is wrong on so many levels. First, the top and the bottom are both too large for her size and shape. They seem to overpower her with size and color. Even if they were the same size, placing these two colors together would not work.

Here is a beautiful way to wear neon for work. Mixing neon with neutral colors is a great way to wear neon to the office. Neutral colors balance out the brightness of the neon while also allowing the color to pop at the same time. Outfit Details: Coral Karen Kane Tech pencil skirt $195, White Michael Kors jacket $160, BCBGeneration Ankle Strap sandals in Warm Sand, and a Rainbow striped Kate Spade iPad case $85.

Summer Lace:

This is a prime example of “just because you can, it doesn’t mean you should.” Jade has the perfect figure for many of summer’s great looks. She is tall and slim with long legs. In this “don’t” look she is wearing a lace accented crop top with matching jean shorts with a lace accent. The top overpowers the shorts a bit with the way it billows at the sleeves. The shorts are just too tight to make this look work.

All Over Lace is a look that really works for summer if it is done right. When wearing all over lace, make sure that the pieces complement each other like this matching sleeveless blouse and trouser shorts from Michael Kors. Balance a voluminous top with a more structured bottom and vice versa. This all white ensemble is accented by nude wedges and even a pop of color with a mint green crossover bag. Outfit Details: Michael Kors white eyelet lace sleeveless top $99.50 and matching shorts $89.50, Jessica Simpson Natural Ruby Tumbled Wedges, Kate Spade Brightbery Green cross body bag $148.

Capri Pants:

With the temperatures heating up it also means that pant lengths will rise. One of the most popular lengths is the popular Capri pant. This is one of those looks that can go completely wrong as we see in this “don’t” outfit. Karen is wearing a tan and white striped t-shirt paired with a basic white Capri pant. The shirt and the pant both have an easy fit look to them that makes the whole look a bit frumpy and outdated. Neither item is particularly flattering on the model.

To make the Capri look work for Summer, have your Capri’s tailored to fit your height and leg. Tailoring your Capris will ensure that you have the perfect fit and help show off your great legs. Pair them with the rainbow striped boat neck sweater and you have a great look for a family cookout or a weekend at the Hamptons. We have also accessorized with a straw and white bag and orange and fushia sandals. Outfit Details: Lauren by Ralph Lauren rainbow striped shirt $129, Lilly Pulitzer Resort White Luxury Capri pant $158, Kenneth Cole Reaction Fuchsia and Orange Sandals, and Lauren by Ralph Lauren Natural and white Straw Satchel $228.

Maxi dresses are one of those options that can be worn completely wrong. This is an example of a maxi done completely wrong. Rachel is wearing a three-quarter sleeve button up top with a long oversized maxi skirt. Even though Rachel is not very tall, she can still wear maxi skirts, but this skirt does not flatter her at all. The pattern is too busy for her height and there are no vents in the skirt to maximize her height.

To make maxis work on shorter women, it is better to go with a solid color or one with a very simple print. This navy maxi is a perfect look for women of shorter stature. With the slide splits and button up front, this dress can be adjusted to show more leg and give the illusion of longer legs. Her waist is accentuated by a wide tan belt to give some separation and make her seem longer from the waist down. Tan sandals with a skinny heel or wedges further elongate the leg and make it so that she appears taller. A wide brim hat in orange adds a pop of color and helps to balance out the look. Wide brim hats can work on shorter women as long as they have a leaner look on the bottom half. Outfit Details: Michael Kors navy maxi dress with side splits and brown belt $150, Jessica Simpson Luggage color high heeled sandal, and Nine West orange straw hat $34.

I pulled this lovely dress as an option. The chiffon evokes a retro glamour. The flattering fit and flare is very Audrey Hepburn inspired.

Manic Monday: How to Use Manicure Tools at Home

At home manicure tools always make for a great girl’s night in.  I love going to a salon and spa to get my nails done, but there is something girlie about doing my own nails, however having the proper tools is essential.  Here is a guide on my top five at home manicure tools, how to use them, and where to buy them!

Conair  True Glow Nail Kit

The entire manicure process in one kit.  It includes a rechargeable nail tool, with multiple heads for shaping nails, while this is a more professional tool, I only recommend it if you have a nail tech friend that can use it on you in the privacy of your home.  This tool is great for a girls night in, invite a nail tech to come and do your girlfriends nails.  It’s a good investment tool.  If you are one of those ladies who has a phobia about sharing your nail tools, this is a great option *smile*

Tweeerman Grip and Snip Spring Cuticle Nipper

Use a cuticle nipper to remove your cuticles.  It’s simple.  Gently close the blade of the nipper and open in short motions. Do not pull your skin or it will cut you, rather let the tool do the work. If the blade does not cut easily, the blade may be dull and it is time to replace the nipper.  Be surer to read the directions on the package of how to use it.

DIOR BEAUTY French Manicure Pen

French manicures are classic and simple to do with this French Manicure pen.  The pen gives a precision line, don’t worry about messing up another French manicure this is an ingenious product!

The Body Shop Handy Manicure Set

This handy kit includes almond hand cream, 4 way nail buffer mini cream, Nail File that smells like almonds! and a metal nail clipper.  This kit comes in different scents. Use this for a quick maintenance in between your visits to the salon.

BUTTER LONDON Backstage Basics Boxed Nail Art Tool Kit

I love great nail art, and no it is not a fad! A few bloggers got into nail art and now they are not into it anymore so it is no longer “cool” lol Nail art has been around for a very long time and it’s not going anywhere.  Now, you can get polish and tools and create your own look.  This kit comes with a dotting tool, striping brush, and a clean up brush.  Check out YouTube for tutorials on nail art designs and do them with this kit.

Aliyah was kind enough to give me an interview about her company.
Q:Tell me a little bit about how you got started.
A: HerHabit Accessories began in Aug 2012 in Raleigh,NC by  Aliyah Dukes & Samone Cowan.  We started our marketing strategy much like Mary Kay by doing in house demonstrations which was called “Ladies Night In”.  In 2013 HerHabit Accessories had its launch party and released it’s website Since then, HerHabit Accessories has been featured in music videos and 3 fashion shows including Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in NYC.  In 2014, Samone Cowan began her own personal shopping business while I moved to NYC to expand and rebrand HerHabit Accessories thus creating collections to support the “Habits” of all women.
Q: Where did you come up with the name HerHabit?
I have always had a thing for accessories and I know people always say that shopping is a bad habit that a lot of woman have, myself included. So when it came time to come up with a name for the business, HER HABIT came about.
Q: What is the price point that women can expect when coming to you for their “habit”

A: HHA were made to be affordable for everyone. Prices range from as low $8, but everything is $100 or less.
Q: The idea of segmenting your pieces into collections for women to FIND her personality is genius; what is your best selling collection?
A: Our best selling collection right now is Feminine Curves, it has more of our colorful pieces and summer ready!
Q: With such a unique appeal to helping women FIND their personal accessory style, do you offer personal shopping for special occasions?
A:yes, we do personal shopping for special occasions such as weddings or clients who are looking for specifics. we have also done collections for fashion designers such as Briana Dione for fashion week in NYC.
Q:How frequent do you get new merchandise?
A:We get shipments about every other week
Q: What celebrity would you like to see in your collection?
Wow, it’s so many to name, but because each collection is different and represents a different girl, I will name 1 celebrity for each look.
Feminine Curves: Kim K
Abstract Attitude: Rihanna or Katy Perry
Street Smart Chic: Beyonce
Reserved Chaos: Tamar Braxton
Q: What do you love about accessories
A:They are timeless. Also they complete any look. I can have on a plain white t-shirt and add one of my statement piece necklaces, and i’m ready to go! Also I like to be different and I like unique chunky accessories.  That is why we only purchase a small amount of each item so that everyone who wears our pieces can stand out from the rest!
Q:What advice do you have for women when it comes to accessories?
A:Chunky necklaces are IN! go big or go home! lol don’t be afraid to try something different and that stands out. watch how many complements you will get!
When picking accessories, have fun with it and don’s get so caught up in the norm.  Let your outfit be centered around your accessories!
Q:Any plans on expanding HerHabit?
A:We are actually working on doing more than just jewelry and incorporating bags this summer! I am super excited for that!
But the goal is to open up shop in all major cities such as NY, Philadelphia, Miami, and California so that our customers will have access to everything in person.
Also, something that is very important to us is giving back.  We want to open a foundation for girls, where we can raise money through fashion for collage scholarships and help in the communities.

This or That: One Pair of Steve Madden Sandals Styled Two Ways

This week’s this or that features a tangerine pair of Steve Madden Plato Multi Strap Orange Gladiator Flat Sandals for $69.95
Steve Madden Plato Multi Strap Orange Gladiator Flat Sandal $69.95.  Click the product for details.
Gladiator sandals are are trend this season! The best advice I can give you about wearing a gladiator sandal is to first find the right height. If you have short legs it is best in an ankle style and if you have longer leaner legs you can handle the longer style.
These are a stark difference from the traditional colors you typically see this style of sandal.  Since it is a bright color be sure to have your toes done because, the bright color brings the eye down to your feet!
This week’s two looks feature a POP or ROCK look.  THIS show the gladiator sandal as a pop of color against a simple color pallet, letting the shoes have a moment.  Gladiator shoes are more edgy and THIS look is pretty classic and simple.  Adding the edgy shoes make for a fun casual look for a fashion-forward chick.  To me a POP of color to an unsuspecting outfit makes a woman look like she has style!
THAT look features a rocker-chic edge. I paired the edgy shoe with a pair of dressy sporty shorts in black and a oversized graphic YOLO tank and fringe crossbody.  Fringe and gladiator are both trends– be careful of adding too many trends to one look.  This works because the two are not so close to each other and the purse is a neutral color.

Dorothy Perkins pale blue crepe shorts $35
Giani Berni Handbag, Nappa Leather Crossbody $128
